Last night Whatsonstage.com theatregoers enjoyed a memorable evening of theatre at the Vaudeville Theatre with stunning performances by Juliet Stevenson and Henry Goodman in Tom Kempinski’s deeply moving Duet for One.

Juliet Stevenson is mesmerising as Stephanie Anderson, a concert violinist who develops multiple scelrosis, and is wonderfully supported by Henry Goodman who portrays her psychatrist Dr Feldman. Having seen this pair’s amazing on stage chemistry it was wonderful to have them both join us, along with director Matthew Lloyd, for the post show Q&A. (more…)

Calendar Girls - 29 April 2009

Thursday, April 30th, 2009

A great evening’s entertainment was had by the Whatsonstage.com theatregoers that attended last night’s performance of Tim Firth’s stage adaptation of his 2003 screenplay Calendar Girls.

This very British tale of five extraoridnary women in the Yorkshire Dales is handled with laughter and heart by the five female leads including Lynda Bellingham and Patricia Hodge. Having enjoyed this poignant and quirky tale we were treated to an amusing Q&A with Tim Firth himself. (more…)

Dancing at Lughnasa - 2 April 2009

Friday, April 3rd, 2009

A night of melancholy and mirth was had by the Whatsonstage.com theatregoers that attended last night’s performance of Brian Friel’s Olivier Award winner Dancing at Lughnasa.

This wonderful production, Dancing at Lughnasa’s first major revival since its premiere almost twenty years ago, comes beautifully to life thanks to a strong ensemble cast including Niamh Cusack, Andrea Corr and Susan Lynch under the skillful direction of Anna Mackmin. The Old Vic, transformed into a theatre-in-the-round, is the perfect setting for this deeply moving story of five spinster sisters in a small invented Irish town in the 1930s. Neatly involving the wider problems of the day in this very personal story Friel gives us a snap shot not only of a collapsing family but also of a rapidly changing world. (more…)

New Boy - 24 March 2009

Wednesday, March 25th, 2009

Trafalgar Studios 2 is a wonderfully intimate space and last night our whatsonstage.com theatregoers were out in force taking over the whole theatre to see the stage adaptation of William Sutcliffe’s best-selling novel New Boy.

With the theatre all to ourselves we laughed out loud at this tale of friendship, love, sex, and how the lines between these can often blur. The entire cast carry this rapidly moving coming of age story with perfect comic timing and a great deal of honesty. After this wonderful show we were joined by the whole cast, as well as the adapter/director Russell Labey, for a post-show question and answer session which was both interesting and amusing. (more…)

On the Waterfront - 19 March 2009

Monday, March 23rd, 2009

Whatsonstage.com theatregoers were treated to a stunning piece of physical theatre at last night’s Outing to Steven Berkoff’s stage adaptation of Oscar-winning film On the Waterfront at the Theatre Royal Haymarket.

The twelve strong cast impressed us with their effortless shifting between roles from gangster to dockworker and even pigeon! All this done not only by subtle changes in costume but by well-thought out and executed mime sequences. Having been amazed by the beautiful construction of this piece we were lucky enough to have Stephen Berkoff join us for a question and answer session. He was joined by the producer of the show Julius Green and Simon Merrells who portrays leading man Terry Malloy. (more…)

Plague Over England - 12 March 2009

Friday, March 13th, 2009

With Nicholas de Jongh’s playwriting debut making waves across theatreland, whatsonstage.com were delighted to take 130 Theatregoers to the Duchess Theatre to see the revered reviewer’s very own first play.

And what a first play it is, both amusing and poignant, Plague Over England set in England in the 1950s tells of John Gielgud’s notorious arrest in a Chelsea public toilet. Not only did we get to enjoy the play itself but we were also treated to a question and answer session after the show with Mr de Jongh himself, the director Tamara Harvey, and key members of the cast, including Celia Imrie (who plays Dame Sybil Thorndike). (more…)
