The sensational revival of Waste at the Almeida still leaves a few unanswered questions. Such as: what exactly is this version? Is it a synthesis, as Sam West implied in a Guardian interview, of the early banned version and the first performed text? Is it the same text as the RSC performed? If not, what is it, exactly?
And the new Methuen Drama edition, woefully short on background information, explanatory notes (there are none), let alone dramaturgical analysis, says the action takes place in 1927 (the programme says 1924) and lists the cast lists of the first unlicensed performance in 1907 (Granville Barker himself played Henry Trebell), the first public performance in 1936 and this new Almeida cast.
This is shocking theatre history, and very confusing to audiences wanting to know what exactly were the historical issues behind the play and how were these modified in the later publication and performances. The major revivals since 1936 have been at Leatherhead in 1966, at the RSC in 1985 and the Old Vic in 1997.
This all matters in the case of Waste not because the public attitudes to political scandal have altered all that much, but because issues of abortion, Independent MPs, the relationship between Church and State and Home Rule for Ireland were all very different at the various times the play was delivered.
Tellingly, Nancy Carroll as Amy O’Connell is more of a flapper than a suffragist, more of a loose, sexually explosive woman than the elegant, sensual siren played by Judi Dench in the RSC’s Edwardian setting of the play.
My instinct tells me that Waste would be better seen in its early twentieth century setting. But the reality of West’s production and the sheer gale force energy of the actors tends to decimate all objections. But the academics still have some explaining to do, and some of their deliberations should be more generally available to punters in Islington.
The late David Jones produced Waste for BBC Television in 1977. I wonder if the channel will show a season of his finest work, from some of the Monitor films to Langrishe, Go Down and his beautiful film of Pinter’s Betrayal?
They jolly well should do so. My telephone has been ringing with many people saying how much they loved and now miss David Jones, a director of rare intellectual integrity, an inspired interpreter of Gorky and Pinter and a key player in the RSC’s first Golden Age. The BBC have probably wiped the tape of his Waste, but if not, perhaps they could dust it down and do a digital re-mastering.
One of the peculiarities of the late Paul Newman was that he never gave autographs. This can’t have been because of the undestandable excuse nowadays; that the grubby signature hunter will rush off and flog the inky flourish on E-bay.
No, Newman just never did. He once visited Stratford-upon-Avon with his actress wife Joanne Woodward and went for dinner in the Dirty Duck. In all his years as chief cook and bottle-washer, my old friend Roy never once asked for anyone’s autograph — and he’d counted them in and counted them out, from Olivier and Gielgud to Dench and Gambon — until Newman turned up.
Newman said no, but offered to buy Roy a drink and made time later in the evening to have a chat with him in the privacy of the back room. Everything we’ve read about Newman being the nicest man on earth is, alas, all too true.
He’d also bought a ring that day for his wife, and somehow she lost it on the floor; Duck staff remember Newman scrabbling around on all fours for half an hour among the spit and sawdust until he found it and replaced it tenderly on his wife’s finger. Bless.
For a definitive edition of “Waste”, you should look to the Cambridge edition “Plays by Harley Granville Barker” which publishes the 1909 version with an appendix that attempts to deliniate the changes he made in the 20′s.

I am the assistant director on the show. The vast majority of the production uses the 1926 version apart from a few additions from 1907 in Act 1. The main difference is in the first section of Act 2 which uses large sections from the 1907 text. It is a version that Sam West put together himself.
We decided on 1924 as a setting because of the references to Lib-Labour Government and the fact that a general election occurs that removes them, putting a Conversative government in place – this happened in 1924.
