Week 3: Live Show
Following Cleo’s surprise exit, were we going the get the result we actually wanted this week? Well, Andrew (left) certainly stepped up his comments this week, coming across as more honest then other member of the panel. This will, hopefully have an effect on the result later tonight.
But, before we speculate, who is going and who should stay; let’s have a look at the runners and riders from the third live show:
First up was Rachel and the theme was songs from the musicals. She did not have the best choice; “Oh! What A Night“ from The Jersey Boys. But this was an excuse to plug Cam Mack’s new London arrival, more than show off Rachel’s vocal prowess. But she delivered, nonetheless. She has the confidence and the emotional maturity to take this role. But she is being chased more furiously by some of the others this week.
Sarah was next and she sang “Maybe This Time“ from the hit Cabaret. Denise is yet to be convinced, but she totally convinced me. Yes, she needs to be a bit tougher but, she has that vulnerable side to her personality that is required to carry the role. I am sure that in future weeks, Sarah will impress even more, if she is kept in.
Francesca did not have the best song, “The Time Of My Life“ from Dirty Dancing. But she was so off key at times, it hurt my ears. She always looks like a desperado to me and if in doubt, she belts, without any pitching considerations. The judges loved her performance though. Apart from Andrew, that is. Tellingly, he criticised her vocals and she looked gutted. But he was correct. The only thing I cannot believe is that none of the other judges heard the ‘off’ moments!
Keisha sang “The Lady Is A Tramp” and impressed far more thn last week. Give her a musical number and she is much better. Note to the producers; stop making them sing pop, as they will not be doing this on stage. It was very show-bizzy and she should stay in. But, I would like her to sing a song which reduces the audience to tears.
Ashley visited the cast of Mamma Mia to help her get prepare her version of “The Winner Takes It All”. It was all a bit flat for me; she acted it well but it was very lacklustre. The judges seemed to be impressed, bar Andrew again, who seems to be the only one talking much sense, this week. Ashley has improved though and should not go home, based on yesterday night.
Jodie toned it down for “Send In The Clowns“ and did well, considering she had to dilute her personality and strip it back. She was very raw and proved that she could act out a song on stage. But, there is something very distracting about watching her and it’s the fact that you worry, she could lapse into ‘cabaret-Cath’ at any minute. I need to see another heartfelt performance before I am totally convinced.
Niamh sang “Moon River“ from Breakfast At Tiffany’s and it was sweet and well sung, but she is vulnerable now as this role is not right for her. She is too clean cut and ‘innocent’ to play this role like her life depends on it. It takes more than a great singer. She has a lovely soothing quality to her voice but she feels more like a Corr to me, than a Nancy.
Jessie did a number from Dreamgirls; “One Night Only“ and the judges went wild with praise. Her vocals were great and it was a feisty turn but her posture was all over the place. She walks across the stage like a bloke wearing heels for the first time and I find it totally distracting. No judge mentioned it but it makes her look awkward and uneasy. I hope this improves as it is holding her back.
The cat with nine lives, Tara was next with a song that was never going test her vocals; “Let’s Hear It for The Boy“ from the show Footloose. But, you can at least inject some fun into the number, but that is exactly what it lacked. Tara was also out of tune and out of her depth. She made excuses at the end, but this is one bad song too many. It’s time for this Welsh lass to be voted off, as most of the others are now streets ahead.
Samantha was last with the huge song, “Somewhere” and it too big a song, to be honest. She tried her best but the song was simply too much for such a young performer. Sam is a great energetic artist, but she has always delivered pop music far more convincingly than these musical numbers. But, compared with Tara, she should win a whatsonstage award!
Who should go? It has to be Tara; Wales, you know it makes sense.
Who should stay? Sarah
Who needs more oom pah pah, else they will be out next? Niamh, Francesca and Samantha
Drop by again later for the results. I hope I am not wrong and a good ‘un goes out!
