I don’t know about you, but once the live shows start next week, I get more into the whole concept. Sure, some of the V.T continues to manipulate, as do some of the song choices, deliberately designed to send someone into the bottom two. But, on the whole, it makes for a much more interesting show when you see the contestants perform on a Saturday night, in front of millions.
I have to admit, the line-up of would-be Nancys is far better than I expected. Francesca, who I mentioned in the last blog entry is clearly a favourite. But, I like the sheer variety this year, in terms of look and vocal ability and style. It’s too early to pin-point a clear favourite at this stage but I do like the following for many different reasons:
Jessie- as she has a real earthy quality and knows how to emote through song.
Niamh- she looks like she wants it, without the cockiness that many of these shows unleash.
Cleopatra- she could be the ‘Seamus’ as she looks like she wants it so bad, she would provide V.F.M as the stock villain.
Note to producers; stop making John tap crying girls on the shoulders, as it looks like he’s trying to pass on a disease, rather than eliminate them. It might suit a plot strand in Torchwood but in terms of a search for a star, it seems to stretch the genre to breaking point.
As for the Olivers, how many of them had gardens the size of a small field? I giggled as we saw VT of them being told the news, as not one of them looked like the ‘raw’ character we were promised. They either seemed to be playing the tuba, tampolining in a garden the size of Primrose Hill or looking enthused at boarding school.
Maybe they should have got Ken Loach involved. I’m sure he could have found a talented kid without pearly white teeth and and a blazer, pretending to look surprised by the presence of a camera crew as they opened their scrolls!

Having seen Francessca on stage in RENT ReMixed she is perfect for the role of Nancy! She has an amazing voice and quite frankly put Denise, Jessie and other cast to shame! She has a great presence and you can see that gleam in her eye, just as you did with Lee at the beginning of Anydream Will Do! She wins my vote by far!

Sorry to burst any proverbial bubbles, but Francessca was out of tune, badly out of toon, and her tone was boardering on emphasemic. Even her cohort from RENT admitted there were pitch problems despite her and the Lord’s, best efforts at propping Francessca up.

Jessie was amazing. She is honest and open but still has that brassiness required for Nancy. Francesca may be a good singer but I think her on stage presence is lacking. They’re all good though however I think Tara and Samantha are way too “pop” and a little too full of themselves.
